Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We work with many open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 6,000 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code.
Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all.
How Google Summer of Code 2013 Works :-
1. Propose a project for approval by a participating open source organization
2.Code the summer away
3.Achieve Ultimate Glory(and get a nice paycheck)
Google Summer of Code 2013 has been announced! Please take a look at the timeline for more information on deadlines.

IIT Madras’s Saarang…
“Big Plan 2013″
This Saarang, IIT Madras is proud to announce the launch of Saarang Eunoia, a program to lighten up the lives of the less fortunate.
As a part of Eunoia, co-ordinators of Big Plan had a series of city-wide events to mark the arrival of Saarang. The first on the list was a ‘Fun with Craft’ workshop at Madras School for the Protection of Children (MSPC). The half-day event saw the participation of more than a hundred children and was conducted by the Saarang Fine Arts and Big Plan teams. After introducing them to the world of origami, the kids were given free rein to express themselves. The result was an overwhelming show of creativity and talent. By the end of it, neither the volunteers nor the participants wanted to let go and there was many a wet eye in the crowd.
Throughout the month of November, Saarang Eunoia visited a host of city schools conducting a variety of activities. The first of this series as a soft skills workshop conducted at a corporation school in Kotturpuram involving a hundred students in a three-hour long interaction.
The biggest event in the kitty was ‘Let Us All Read’. Conducted across eight corporation schools in the city, the session saw students entering the animated world of stories and poetry with the help of book distributions (four hundred books) and reading sessions. This distribution drive is expected to benefit a total of ten thousand students. Saarang volunteers will also go a step further by helping schools renovate their libraries using available resources. Giving equal importance to both English as well as vernacular literature, several competitions were conducted to enhance the students’ reading skills. ‘Let Us All Read’ is a year-long initiative culminating in Saarang 2014, involving the formation of reading clubs as well as workshops by eminent personalities. At the end of the year, the program will be assessed and reviewed to ensure betterment of future editions.
Apart from helping underprivileged children, Saarang Eunoia also works to uphold the rights of the environment as well as animals around us. Big Plan has a collaborative event with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to highlight the need to share the environment with other species for a sustainable future. This initiative will be conducted at various spots spread across the city and is sure to surprise animal lovers and the general public alike!
